Most microwaves just heat. The Ramtons RM/589 also grills. It has 23 litres of space and a 1000W grill, so it doesn't just heat your meals, it browns and crisps them too. Use the 800W microwave when you want to reheat or defrost, turn on the grill for your toast, chicken or the top of a lasagne, or mix both modes to cook your food right through while the outside gets nice and crispy. It gives you 11 power levels, 7 auto menus, defrosting by weight or time, and a child lock.

A basic microwave will warm your food, but it leaves things a bit soft: your leftover chips go limp and your bread goes chewy. The grill fixes that.
Most food packets tell you how long to cook for an 800W or 900W microwave. Since this one's 800W, you can follow those packet times as printed. If a packet only shows a 900W time, give it a little extra and check on it halfway through.
23 litres gives you a bit more room than the standard 20-litre size. You can fit a larger dish inside, which helps when you're cooking for the whole family instead of heating up a single plate. But if you live on your own or with one other person and only need to warm meals, a smaller solo microwave will save you some money.
Enter how much the food weighs and let the microwave work out the time, or set the timer yourself. Defrosting by weight is easier, and it stops the outer edges of your meat cooking while the middle stays frozen.
Multi-stage cooking lets you set your steps in one go, like defrosting first and then cooking, so you can press start and walk away to attend to other things. If you're in a rush, quick start fires up the microwave at full power with one press.
The child lock disables the buttons so little hands can't mess with the settings. It's handy if you have young children running around, especially because the grill and combination modes make the inside, the door and the rack hot. Always use oven gloves when you take food out after grilling.
Your microwave needs air around it to stay cool, especially when you're using the grill. Don't push it right up against the wall or hide it away in a closed cupboard. Leave some open space at the back, along the sides and on top, and keep it away from your cooker and the sink.
When stima goes off and comes back on, it's the sudden voltage swing that damages microwaves, not the power cut itself. A stabiliser protects the control board; we stock them from KSh 3,000 to 20,000 depending on what you need.
When you grill, fat splashes onto the inside walls and ceiling. Give it a quick wipe once it's cooled down, before that grease bakes on tight. For tough, dried-on food, heat a bowl of water with a squeeze of lemon juice for a few minutes, then wipe. You can take out the glass turntable and the metal rack and wash them in the sink.
